RGM Tutoring

About Me

You can find out everything you need to know about me and RGM Tutoring below, including where I am from, my studies and experience, and why I created RGM Tutoring.

May 1992 - 2010
Early Life

I was born and grew up in Birmingham in the UK, a diverse industrial city once known as “the city of a thousand trades” and notable for having more canals than Venice! It was here that I completed my compulsory education and gained my International Baccalaureate diploma in 2010.

Instead of going stright to university, I decided to explore what my passions really were. I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher ever since I was a child, I just didn’t know what I wanted to teach!. After some soul searching and working to save up some money, I moved to Madrid to learn Spanish for 3 months. It was here that I totally fell in love with language and decided to work towards becoming a language teacher.

University

I returned to the UK and began studying at the University of Portsmouth, where I obtained a degree in Applied Languages (Spanish and Italian), alongside my Trinity CertTESOL certificate to become an English teacher.

As part of my degree I had to spend a year abroad. I chose to split my time overseas into two placements, one in Rome, and another in Malaga. In Rome I taught iGCSE programmes in English at a local secondary school. Whereas in Malaga, I spent my time tutoring English privately in addition to taking university courses in translation and interpreting. During my time at university, I also taught English on undergraduate courses and took part in several summer camps as an English teacher too!

Moving On

After graduation, I trained to become a secondary school teacher of modern languages in the UK before moving to Madrid where I began teaching in the private sector.

It was here that l developed my expertise in Cambridge exam preparation, working for the likes of The British Council, International House, and other Cambridge exam preparation centres.

New Challenges

In early 2018, I became seriously ill and was diagnosed with several life long medical conditions which have drastically altered my life. I spent just over four years learning to live within my new boundaries and how to be myself again.

During this time, I was unable to leave my house but I still wanted to continue learning and teaching. This made me realise that many other disabled people may be in a similar position regarding accessing quality education in a traditional physical setting.

I strongly believe that everyone has the right to an education, and I will support anyone who wants to better themselves.

It is this conviction and motivation, combined with my other interests in language learning and acquisition, student welfare ,and online materials design, that led to the creation of RGM Tutoring.

From new challenges... to rebuilding and looking to the future...

Recovery and Rebuilding

Post recovery, I spent a great deal of my free time learning everything there is to know about quality online teaching. I have taught myself many new skills which have all led to the creation of the RGM Tutoring you see before you now.

When creating this site, I wanted to make RGM Tutoring an embodiment of accessible and engaging online learning that is not just a rapid response to a global pandemic, but a commitment to quality online education that is done well.

Looking to the Future

In terms of what is next… Beyond the virtual classroom, I teach part time at an English academy in Madrid that I absolutely love. It is here that I am always challenged to be the best teacher I can be, through regular professional development sessions and observations, in addition to knowledge and advice from even more experienced teachers.

I am also expanding my commitment to English language teaching in other ways by studying towards more advanced teaching qualifications. I also have plans to become a Cambridge examiner in the very near future.

You are all more than welcome to join me on this journey of online language education at RGM Tutoring.
